Abstract

The guide entitled “How do we Write the Thesis and the Master’s Dissertation” proposes to support the college and master’s degree students in their endeavour to write more efficiently this kind of papers in order to fulfill the quality standards required by universities and to promote their graduation project in a successful manner.

The book is approached from the student’s perspective and hopes to become a more accessible and efficient tool, which is the reason why it focuses on the practical issues.

In order overcome any misunderstanding, caused by a specific terminology, the guide stylistically uses textual explanations, the suggestive quote and the illustration with specific examples, thus providing a complementary intuitive source for the abstract exposition. The guide contains less rules, but a chain of suggestions meant to increase the efficiency in writing and to avoid a possible wrong start, guiding the student step by step in preparing, writing and presenting the dissertation - in fact the three constituent parts of the guide.

Part one deals with logistics issues such as choosing the project mentor, time scheduling, organizing work place and the necessary tools.

Part two approaches the writing stages, starting with topic selection and continuing with creating one’s own ideas, building tools in order to guide the research and writing, documentation and research. Next comes designing the plan, organizing and structuring the material, writing the first draft, revising (at both organizational and stylistic level) and correcting (according to grammatical, spelling and punctuation rules). Moreover, besides the actual writing process, the guide also contains brief hints concerning the use of the computer.

Part three tackles layout elements as well as problems that occur when presenting the dissertation in front of the panel. Finally, we offer a few tips to add value to the paper and we draw some of the most frequent mistakes when it comes to approach this kind of papers.

Given the fact that the dissertations are unique, the guide only offers tips on “how” to write a paper, but not on “what” it should contain as a main text, consequently the student will have to customize the general ideas expressed hereby.
